As we learned earlier, Turkish verbs have a structure: (Stem)(time indicator)(personalization suffix) such as gel-di-m (come-did-I). We’ll use the persons we learned in the previous tiny step along with the personalization suffixes. They are not that different from the conjugations to the words. The following table has the verb suffixes:
| In English | In Turkish | As a suffix | If a verb ends with a vowel |
| I | Ben | -ım, -im, -um, -üm | -m |
| You | Sen | -sın, -sin, -sun, -sün | -n |
| He/She/It | O (neutral) | no suffix | no suffix |
| We | Biz | -ız, -iz, -uz, -üz | -k |
| You (plural) | Siz | -sınız, -siniz, -sunuz, -sünüz | -nız, -niz, -nuz, -nüz |
| They | Onlar | -ler, -lar | -ler, -lar |
***
Let’s use these in simple sentences:
Ben gel-di-m = I came
Sen gel-di-n = You came
O gel-di = He/She/It came (note that there is no suffix for the verb)
Biz gel-di-k = We came
Siz gel-di-niz = You (plural) came
Onlar gel-di-ler = They came
***
Since these suffixes are very similar it will not take too long to get acquainted.
Let’s see an example without a vowel finish:
Koş-uyor-um = (Run-currently-I) I am running
Koş-uyor-sun = You are running
Koş-uyor = He/She/It is running
Koş-uyor-uz = We are running
Koş-uyor-sunuz = You (plural) are running
Koş-uyor-lar = They are running
***
Another example:
Ye-r-im = (Eat - does - I) I eat
Ye-r-sin = You eat
Ye-r = He/She/It eats
Ye-r-iz = We eat
Ye-r-siniz = You (plural) eat
Ye-r-ler = They eat
***
Last example:
Al-mış-ım = (Buy-have-I) I have bought
Al-mış-sın = You have bought
Al-mış = He/She/It has bought
Al-mış-ız = We have bought
Al-mış-sınız = You (plural) have bought
Al-mış-lar = They have bought
***
This concludes learning personalization suffixes. Now it’s time to learn some tenses that are added to the verbs. After that we’ll be able to say our first full sentences!
